SMF — fine granulator
The SMF is a high-speed knife granulator for the fine grinding of plastic granulates and waste, and other soft to medium-hard materials — producing a finer, more uniform particle where a standard granulator would leave it too coarse.
Herbold lists the SMF among its specialised granulators, alongside the SMP for profiles and pipes and the SMR. Depending on the application, screens down to a minimum of 150 µm can be used. The type shown in Herbold's 2025 granulators brochure is the SMF 500/1000.

What it processes
Herbold recommends the SMF for lines that fine-grind soft, fibrous, thin-walled or elastic materials. Its own examples are plastic drilling and milling shavings, PE plastics and cellulose sheets. More generally, the SMF takes plastic granulates and plastic waste, and other soft to medium-hard materials.

SMF, SML or SMS?
The three machines do different jobs in Herbold's granulator range.
In figures, from Herbold's brochure: the SML comes in six types with rotor diameters of 300–600 mm and drives of 11–132 kW; the SMS has rotor diameters of 450–800 mm, working widths of 600–2,000 mm and drives of 37–250 kW; the SMF takes screens down to 150 µm.
SML — light to medium load. Herbold positions the SML for everyday applications in plastics processing: as a primary granulator for high-volume parts beside an injection or blow moulding machine, as an edge-trim granulator, and for plastic waste from thin to medium wall thickness, such as films, jerry cans, bumpers, profiles and thermoformed parts.
SMS — heavy duty. The SMS is built for especially demanding work: massive clumps, tough fibres, extremely thin films and large material volumes. It is also available as a washing granulator, where granulating with large quantities of water adds a washing effect in the same step.
SMF — fine grinding. The SMF is a specialised high-speed knife granulator for fine grinding, with screens down to 150 µm. If the material is soft, fibrous, thin-walled or elastic and the goal is a fine particle, the SMF is the machine to discuss. For general production scrap, start with the SML; for heavy or contaminated feed, the SMS.

Herbold also lists additional equipment for its granulators, including metal separators and magnet systems, air classifiers and screening machines for removing dust and light fractions from the regrind, pneumatic and mechanical conveyors, feed bunkers and silos, and sound insulation.
